Learning Arabic can be difficult for English speakers. There are many dialects of Arabic, many of which are incomprehensible to other Arabic speakers. However, every Arab nation has an “official language” based on classical or literary Arabic. This standard Arabic dialect is the language of the Qur’an. When you learn Arabic, you should begin with a study of Modern Standard Arabic. Later you can learn local dialects.
If you already speak another Semitic language, like Hebrew, learning Arabic will be easier for you. Also, language learning becomes easier the more you do it. If you have already studied a foreign language, it will be easier for you to learn Arabic.
Students are sometimes frustrated by their seeming lack of progress when they begin learning Arabic. Be patient. Remember that it takes time to learn a language. The State Department estimates that it takes 80 to 88 weeks (roughly a year in the classroom full-time and a year in-country) to get to a level 3 on a 5-point scale on their Modern Standard Arabic fluency test.
